A new recall is coming for the hydration aisle. PepsiCo is pulling around 122,000 cases of Gatorade from the shelves.
According to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration notice, PepsiCo is voluntarily recalling various Gatorade products across 37 US states due to undeclared Yellow No. 6 and Yellow No. 5 artificial food dyes. According to the notice, the recall initiated on Sept. 25, with the FDA classifying it as a class II recall on Oct. 2.
The FDA classified a Class II recall as one which involves “a situation in which use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”
Undeclared products with dyes like Yellow No. 6 and Yellow No. 5 may trigger allergic reactions like asthma symptoms or hives.
The food dye-related recall follows a nationwide effort to phase out artificial dyes as part of the Trump Administration’s Make America Healthy Again initiatives. Last year, dozens of companies, including PepsiCo, agreed to phase out the dyes by 2028.
PepsiCo’s recent recall involves four different 28-ounce Gatorade products, including the Lemon Lime, Lemon Lime Zero, Orange, and Orange Zero flavors.
The 37states with the affected product include Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin.
According to the notice, no press release was posted alongside the recall. PepsiCo has not yet announced a refund process for affected customers.
