Hot summer days call for a refreshing drink. National Mojito Day celebrates one of those adult beverages. While there are several different versions of the origin story for this libation, most agree that it was invented in Cuba. Here are some fun facts to impress your coworkers with at happy hour and some great deals to mark the occasion.

What is in a Mojito?

At its core, a mojito is made up of five ingredients: white rum, lime juice, soda water, mint, and sugar. Before you pour any liquid in your glass, muddle the mint at the bottom. Let that be as you combine the rest of the ingredients by shaking or stirring. Pour the liquid in the minty glass and add some ice.

A brief history of the Mojito …

Let’s get into the competing stories about how the mojito came to be. Way back in the 16th century, a privateer named Francis Drake was hired by Queen Elizabeth I to mess with Spain’s territories abroad. He landed in Cuba but didn’t really put up a fight and left without a major incident. Nevertheless, a drink was named for him called the Draque. It was made up of aguardiente de caña (a liquor predating rum), sugar, lime, and mint. This beverage was considered medicinal. Many believed it evolved into the modern mojito thanks in part to Don Facundo Bacardí Masó founding his distillery and revolutionizing rum production.

Another version of this story is that American tourists brought the Mint Julep to the island in the 1920s and 1930s. The Cubans riffed on it and created the mojito.

Literary icon Ernest Hemingway also factors into this. Some claim the first mojito was made at La Bodeguita del Medio in Havana. Framed at that watering hole is a note by the famous author. It states: “My mojito in La Bodeguita, my daiquiri in El Floridita.” Despite this sign, many claim the writer never mentioned the drink in his work and claim he didn’t consume them himself.
